CHA Ranger's Designer Challenge

Well, it's finally here!

CHA has officially begun, and so here come the samples from the depths of our very souls!

This was one of the most fun of all.

The Designers Challenge from Ranger using

Stickles, Ice Stickles, Liquid Pearls, or Accents (Glossy and Crackle).

And it was so much fun. I LOVED how this turned out. I hope you do, too!

We were given a 13" paper mache mannequin for a base, and a ton of products to play with.

I knew when I saw the gorgeous new colors, that the Blues would be my 1st choices.

I also used Perfect Pearls to paint several pieces so that everything sparkled. 

The headpiece is a pin I found at JoAnn's.

I made a dress out of muslin 1st to be able to fit it to the dress form before cutting out the blue material.

This material is from a project I did a few years back for a Cloth Paper Scissors accordion book.

It is so beautiful with the gold metallic studs and mica chips on the wonderful watercolor-looking silky material. So glad I saved a piece.

The leaves are hand-cut from Grungepaper and have Stickles outlined with Liquid Pearls.

Getting the neckline was the hardest. The material is slippery.

The Grungeboard Butterflies are painted with Perfect Pearls and Stickles as well.

Wonder Tape secured it all perfectly!!!!

The Ice Stickles don't show up well in the picture, but they are all over the tulle skirt and the headpiece.

It really does SPARKLE!

 I added a wooden base that painted with Perfect Pearls first and then coated with Ice Stickles.

The Stickles and Liquid Pearls really were fun to draw designs around the base for added glitz!

 Thanks to Ranger for this great opportunity to "play with products". It was a BLAST!

A Snowman, a Tissue Paper Flower & a Bell

So many Ranger Products here....and some fun ephemera I've picked up along the way.

I used: District Market - Tissue Wrap - Composer for the Flower.

Remember when we used to make flowers out of Kleenex???  It's the same principle. Fold the tissue paper accordion style. Then bind in the middle and fan out to make the flower.

I put layers of Distress Stain-Fired Brick, Distress Ink-Fired Brick, Crushed Olive Distress Stickles, and Gold Stickles on the Tissue Paper and let it dry before folding.

The bell is on the wire that holds the flower together.

The Metal Foil Tape is used for the trim at the bottom. Tim's new Sizzix Sizzlits Decorative Strip Die - Vintage Lace is AMAZING!

You get 7 trimmings with each run. Pretty Cool!

I added the Metal Foil Tape to some dark cardstock. Then Die Cut the Holiday Lamppost Holly Leaves. Add a layer of dark cardstock behind the leaves to add shadow.

Use Pesto Alcohol Ink and Sharpie markers to make them green.

The little Snowman is so cute. I found him at Hobby Lobby as well as the Gold Tinsel Trim.

I originally had this snowman on the tag.

Nice sunny day picked up the gold really well....

I'd photographed, edited, sized, you know....the whole enchilada!

Then I looked at this snowman and something seemed to be inherently WRONG with him....

DOES HE LOOK JUST A BIT STRANGE TO YOU??????

Really, I still cannot for the life of me, figure out his anatomy.

So I tore him off the tag...and added a different one, but I thought later, you might find him at least a bit amusing. So here he is.

One picture taken on the porch in sunlight, and the other under the Ott Light with indirect sun.

Straight-on shot doesn't show the sparkle like the angle shot in the previous post.

Who Wants a Tutorial????

Thankful, I am so very thankful for all my blessings, especially my wonderful family and friends.

So, for you peeps out there who want to CREATE, here's a tutorial using some fantastic products from Ranger and the talented Mr. Tim Holtz.

I love using my favorite Tool-the Vagabond to die cut and emboss for this tutorial.

First I  took a #8 Manila Tag, spritzed it with water, and swiped several colors of Distress Stains over the tag letting them blend slightly.

I used Chipped Sapphire, Barn Door, Broken China, Tea Dye and Pine Needles. Spritz a bit more and dry with a Heat It tool.

Then swipe your Distress Ink Pad Vintage Photo on your Craft Sheet and spritz with water. Dip the tag in it, heat set, and pick up a few more dots of color for interest. Dry again.

Then I sprayed a slight mist and drops of Espresso Adirondack Color Wash. Dry again.

Add a strip of Traveler Tissue Tape to one side. If you're really reading this...you don't have to dry here....that's a joke.

OK, this is upside down to some people...I used the new Thankful Texture Fades on the tag. Then carefully...carefully swiped Black Soot DI across the raised letters with the Blending Tool.

You've seen this technique before, but here it is again. Die cut leaves from packaging plastic with the Tattered Leaves die.

Add Alcohol Inks to the back.

I used Terra Cotta, Sunset Orange, Sunshine Yellow, Butterscotch, and Pitch Black. A bit of Silver Metallic Mixative was also used.

Then add Copper, Gold and Lettuce paint dabbers OVER the Alcohol inks....this is all on the back of the leaves.

Flip it over and add vein lines with a permanent pen. I like the Write4All by Stabilo.  Add a bit of Gold Paint dabber to the edges, too, for contrast.

A dash of heat from the Heat It Tool and you can curl the leaves as you like.

I added Gold Acrylic paint dabber over the embossed area...kind of hard to see the contrast here.

The cool stencil is from Julie Balzer -Time Travel, (they have a whole ton of new stencils in at Inspiration Emporium in the Just In section) added with Jennie Bowlin Malted Milk paint dabber.

I pushed the Spinner into embossing ink, then into the jar of Spruce Green UTEE and hit it with the Heat gun.

 Sprinkled a few bits of Butterscotch Adirondack embossing powder. And heated it again.

Then I decided it needed better contrast, so I took the top off the Copper paint dabber and painted the word Thankful.

Now you wonder, why then should I go to all the trouble to add the Black Soot DI???

Because it has created the perfect shadow outline to the raised letters!!!!

I would like to tell you I planned it that way all alone, but it's just a happy result of constant layering.

Since there's a lot of metallic color and plastic, there is a lot of different colors that show up in different angles of shooting the photos.

I think the copper lettering and the gold paint on the leaves shows up best here.

Layer up your leaves, a Timepiece and brad with your spinner. Add some Copper paint dabber around the edge of the tag.

I like to add my tags to a piece of black chipboard for stability.

And a row of Gold nailheads from Mark Richards is at the bottom for one last section of Bling.

Doin' the Happy Dance Again!!! YAY!

OH! You guys will LOVE, LOVE, LOVE this new publication....I am amazed at the color, the layout, the 300 different projects that are in it......it's a MUST have for sure.

Wickedly Sparkly and Spooky!

I love to paint wooden pieces and put them together. This is just a piece of 2x4 scrap.

This piece was really fun.....the bluish paint, try as I might, would not photograph true to color. The knobs are purple!

Everything else is true to color....sometimes it just works out that way.

Got my 3 new Tim Holtz Autumn colors of Distress Ink and had to wait until I got home from Minnesota to play with them.

The Witch is cut from the new Kraft Spooky Words from Canvas Corp. LOVE the whole Kraft collection from them.

I used the Bewitching Hour dies for the Bats and Witch. I cut more with Metal Foil Tape for bats on the sides.

The Witch has the new Ripe Persimmon and Seedless Preserves Fall Distress Inks  (available here) added to the Kraft colored paper. Ended up really cool I think. The Broom end is colored with Mustard Seed and Gathered Twigs.

The bats and BOO are painted with Perfect Pearls and the front has Distress Stickles Rusty Hinge and Crushed Olive to make it sparkle.

It's hard to see the Pewter Perfect Pearls painted on the bat wings. I stenciled dots with Jennie Bowlin Malted Milk paint dabber and a Julie Balzer stencil Punchinella.

The squiggles on the top pieces are Lettuce Dimensional Pearls.  I'm really fond of all the Ranger products named Lettuce....don't know why.

 This shows the Distress Stickles up close and the Sunflower Sparkle on the Maya Road chipboard letters "boo."

The Seasonal Salvage Stickers are layered onto black chipboard.

I used a white Poster Pen from Sharpie....that they no longer make...boo!


The paints were a combination of many Golden paints.

Can't wait for the Indian Summer weather that's coming soon!

Kraft Tag and Picket Fence Distress Stain Fun

It was a pristine day on the lake. Blue skies and the trees are turning. I got some great shots of the sunset on the lake. I'll post them later.

Gotta eat the goodies from the bakery in Cold Springs. It's a must stop whenever we are here.

One of the new products from Ranger that were showcased at CHA was the new Kraft Tags.

These are really fun to work with, especially when you add the Picket Fence Distress Stain.

I LOVED working with the smaller tag and adding the new colors in the Distress Stains over the great opaque-looking Picket Fence. I used Dried Marigold, Broken China, and Dusty Concord.

I sprayed with a light mist of Pewter Perfect Pearls Mist and heat set.

Then stamp with one of my favorite Tim stamps of all time, Lost and Found and Urban Chic using Jet Black Archival Ink.

The Maya Road trim at the bottom gives you a good base and the Shabby Accoutrement in the lower left corner brings your eye into the piece for a starting point. I tied waxed linen through the button.

The Lavish Trim is died with Worn Lipstick, Wild Honey, and Dusty Concord   Distress Inks dried with the Heat It tool.

Add a small pearl Bauble, Type Charm, and gold Chain Tassle with a Jump Ring to the ribbon and tie in a bow to the top.

Loved making this Kraft Tag!

When I got these Kraft Tags from Ranger to use for samples at CHA, I knew I was going to love them

One reason, of course, is my fondness for BROWN!  The second was I knew how cool they would be with probably my favorite color combination. Brown, Red, Black and White.

I think they are a Classic combination for Vintage pieces.  I'm just sayin', I think they work.

Add a bit of shine, like Gold, and it is all you need for a tag that's fun!

 

I trimmed down a #8 Kraft Tag and embossed with white embossing powder and the Steampunk stamp. I decided to cut the bottom off with the Mini Scallop die just for kicks.

Then I used Fired Brick and Aged Mahogany Distress Inks around the edges. You cannot beat the richness of the Mahogany on the Kraft colored paper!!!!

Next I layered it onto a black Chipboard tag cut with the large Tag Die from Tim.

I cut some Mini Gears out of Grungeboard and swiped the Picket Fence Distress Stains on them. Then added Gold, Silver, and Copper Paint Dabbers on them.

Loved how the paint dries with texture from the sponge applicators.

Add a bit of Gold around the black chipboard tag for some contrast.

The light bulb has Sunshine Yellow Alcohol Ink dabbed on it. Very vintage looking I think. I wrapped a piece of wire around the base and glued tit o the tag.

The Plaquette is added over a piece of magic mesh just to make it stand out a bit more.

The Pen Nibs are glued in a pattern to make the eye follow around the piece from the lower left, up to the Timepiece and Spinner assemblage and around to the Gears. The Sprocket Gears are just a bit more metal here and there.

The ribbon at the bottom gives the piece a base for stability and the Pen Marks outline the piece to make the color pop!

Fun Time at Scrapaganza and a Few More Pics

Well, it was a FULL HOUSE!!! And a Happy, Inky HOUSE!

"It was a beautiful day, and we were beautiful, too!" (to  quote an old friend)

Lots of Metal and lots of Ink in Davenport Iowa and Scrapaganza. Thank you so much for all your hard work girls.

It was GREAT! Could not have asked for more.....

I tried to keep Penny busy by letting her take some pictures!

She takes great shots and got some of the many smiling faces that were there for the fun.

All kinds of different color combos....that's what we LOVE to see!

Many brought their own family pictures and incorporated them into their projects. They were wonderful images from the past.

Thank you Penny for taking pictures. It's so hard to find the time when you're talking and having a full day! You always make me smile! (see below...)

And just to prove I was working, she got me demoing the Melting Pot and Embossing Powders with the Vintaj pieces. Jess's technique dazzled them!!!

Here on the left is a fun one. We used UTEE Bronze, Green Zinnia, and Violet then coated with a layer of Clear.  The one on the right has some fine black and Orange Glitter Embossing.  REALLY cool! Much more sparkly in person.

I seemed to knock the bluebird off my Row House piece from CHA and didn't find it anywhere, so I decided to try out my new Snow Cap Mixative on a different one, and painted in Denim blue Alcohol Ink and Sunshine Yellow over the top.

I think he turned out even better than the original that didn't have the Snowcap base!!! It's easy to shadow the colors with a touch of Alcohol Blending Solution on your brush.


Went to the Lincoln Balloon and Art Fest today. Bill likes seeing the old cars that come and line the streets downtown.


Lunch with Harry and Joni. Then out to the Wine Tasting Tent with live music. Our favorite was the Sweet Red Wine....a simple name. They're usually more exotic.

Harry didn't hear me well over the music and thought I said the name was CHEAP Red Wine. So that's what he went and asked for. It made the owners laugh.

So back home and another beautiful day!

Tomorrow.....2 soccer games with the girls. They both won on Saturday and each scored a goal!!!

This is a piece that didn't make it into a project.....it is so stinkin' cute. I just LOVED it.

But alas, time ran out and that's all I can say. See the previous post on how I did this.

Can't wait to show you the ones that were in the Ranger booth!!!!

Remember the Tim Holtz Bookcovers Stamp???? This is the largest one on Shrink Plastic. I use white gesso on the plastic before I heated it to shrink.

Then I colored it in with Distress Inks on a brush.

Notice the difference in size when shown next to a Tim Accoutrement. Ha! Is that AMAZING!

(and if anyone knows how to stop all the garble that this shows up with on FB notes, please let me know)
